U.S. Border Cantina

This is our new Girl's Night Out hangout. It doesn't look like much (inside or out), but the food is good, the drinks are better ($3.50 margaritas!) and no crowd or loud noise to speak of (unless you count us....we can get a little rowdy :) ) Tucked just off of West End behind Discount Liquors....centrally located since all us girls are spread out around the city.

The Adirondack Chair

We had an unusually warm weekend here and, though I love my winter and snow, I wasn't going to stay inside and not enjoy a little sunshine (and some Mello Yello. and some knitting)

Jersey Mike's

I love me some Jersey Mike's! Their bread is really good and they slice the meat and cheese right there. And if you order a veggie sandwich (I never would, but, you know....), they even ask you if you want the slicer completely cleaned off. So nice to the vegetarians!

Hula Hoopers at Shelby Park

Jackpot! I went to the park and hula hoop walkers were there. These photos don't even show the full group....I bet there are at least 30 of them. And they are training for the Music City Half Marathon. I can't hula hoop standing still....I can't imagine doing it while walking. You go, girls!

Berry Hill Animal Hospital

Josey's favorite place! I really like the staff here at Berry Hill Animal Hospital. They don't take it personally that Josey growls at them when they're examining her and they don't mind the thousand questions I usually throw at them. I just wish they didn't have to take so much of my money :)

January 29-31, 2010

Nashville doesn't get much snow. We are in a "valley" and almost everything goes around us (if you live "on the plateau" you see white stuff all winter) . It can be very frustrating for us snow lovers because it is often forecast, but then falls apart at the last minute. We had a huge snow dump in 2003 and only a minor accumulation here or there since. Until Friday.

They started talking about this storm on Monday. They were very cautious at first about whether this would happen or not. By Wednesday, there was no question (and that NEVER happens). It was only a question of when and how much. It started about 9AM on Friday and I ended up with about 4" at my house. Let's hope we don't have to wait 7 years to see this again!

We can't say this very often...indeed....

About 9AM. I'm at work. Don't ask.....

9:20AM

9:40AM

Finally home. This was shortly after 10:00

At my favorite Shelby Park

The poor birds! They flew south for this? I fed them bread and cereal and anything else I could find...

Feeding the birds was also very entertaining to Josey

Why, yes, that is the sign for a psych hospital. This is actually where I go for my almost-weekly therapy sessions on Tuesdays. I've been going for about a year now and am pretty happy with the results. And, really, everyone could use therapy :)

Shelby Bottoms Park Greenway

There is so much to love about this greenway. The path is nice and wide.....you very rarely have to move out of anyone's way. It's 4 miles out and 4 miles back and the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and mile markers are easy to see. The landscape is very nice....everything is all natural, there are wooden bridges along the way and lots of trees. It also runs right along the Cumberland River. You can hear the General Jackson riverboat as it goes by :)

I also love the people out there. You see EVERYTHING from walkers, runners and bicyclists to roller blades, hula hoops, incumbant bikes and more. It's never really crowded and everyone smiles and says hi.

There will be a lot more pictures from Shelby Park because there are so many little things I want to capture. I spend a lot more time out there after daylight savings time ends and I can go after work. (and maybe I'll even get to the point where 4 miles doesn't wear me out!)

January 19, 2010.....and a change in the rules...

Vanderbilt football stadium

(Ok, first off, this was taken at twilight and I couldn't "edit" the blue out of it.)

So, anyway, this stadium got a makeover recently. It was not quite finished when I went and saw the Dave Matthews Band there last spring. I am hoping that maybe Dave and the boys will consider coming back to Nashville if they can continue to use this as a venue. I think I may have also marched drum corps at this stadium....hmmmmmm....I'll have to check my "tour" records and see if that's true....

And now, onto the "change in the rules" portion of today's post. So, I mentioned in the "Observations" post that the limited daylight hours were not on my side. This has really become a problem. So I am relaxing the "photo every single day" rule. It will also help when I have days like Saturday when I had a few things going on that I could take pictures of! I hope to still end up with 300+ pictures....just not of every single thing I pass to and from work :)

Lightning 100

Because taking a picture of my radio would seem silly, here is the website for my favorite Nashville station. They are "locally owned and operated" and play excellent alternative rock. They remind me of a college station....playing cutting edge stuff and always trying new artists. So, see? Nashville isn't all about country music....

My favorite spot

I very often post on Facebook or Twitter that I'm sitting with wine, knitting, the cat, etc. This is that spot. You can see yarn, penguins, the remote, my favorite afghan and, of course, the laptop. I could probably survive sitting here for days....

The Big Stitch 5

This was my first time at this event and it was great! All these people are knitting and crocheting hats, scarves and gloves to be given to those in need. They had yarn for sale and little classes set up. I will definitely be going back for the next one. For more info, visit Knit and Crochet Tennessee.

Observations

So, I'm close to two weeks into this and am pretty happy that I've only missed one day. What I didn't anticipate is how hard this would be due to *limited sunlight*. The mornings are difficult because my car windows are covered in frost (not good for photo clarity) and if I leave work even a little late, I don't have enough daylight to even get me halfway home. This summer is going to be so easy!

I also have to be careful. I can't take full pictures of my house. Or the street sign where I live. Or my place of business. These here internets are filled with some crazy people. I don't want to meet them.

Taking pictures while driving is also a skill I don't possess. Once I'm not racing the clock, I will be able to stop and get the shot without moving.

But, all in all, this has been pretty fun. And only 350 more days to go!

The Nashville MTA

I know...exciting, right? But this is one of our lovely buses. I'm not crazy about the bus system here (after going to London and seeing how great THEIR system is). I really wanted to take the bus to work back when gas was so high, but it would have cost me MORE a month to do that than to fill my car....and taken me over twice as long to get to and from work. They are making improvements here with mass transit....someday I hope it's worth it for me to utilize it...

Korean Veterans Bridge

Almost home! This takes me across the Cumberland River to the east side. In about 5 minutes I'll be pulling into the driveway...

Stitch 'n Bitch

We've been meeting to knit/crochet together for about 5 years maybe? We've moved around a few times and our most recent spot is a little-used lounge in an office/shopping complex. Comfy chairs, good coffee, friends and yarn. Life is good.

Zanies

Our local comedy club. I've never been there (though doesn't it look awfully small?). It's just up the street from work, so I may have to check out upcoming comedians and make my way over.

My Charlie Brown Maple tree

I bought this tree last summer (2009) and when I was loading it into my car, I broke some of it off. I went ahead and planted it and it still produced leaves, so I'm hoping that it will survive and grow.

Davis Nolan, Channel 2

While I curse them every winter for the lack of snow, Channel 2 has my favorite meteorologists. They do the best job during stormy times and I love their weather blog. Now if we could just get all the snow they forecast.....

January 8, 2010

They put this beautiful sign up about two years ago. They're really working hard to revitalize this neighborhood and, even though you can't tell here, they work on the median every season (tulips in the spring....other flowers in the summer....pumpkins in the fall....). I do wonder how something established in 1984 can be considered historic though :)

(and, once again.....SNOW!)

Recycling Day

Meet Curby! I really like our recycling system...these big bins are great. I do wish they picked up more than one day a month, but I'm pretty good at breaking things down and squishing them in there. (oh, and notice the flying snow too!)

Outside my office window

It's a narrow window, but it's all mine. I need to turn my desk so that I can see out easier (right now my back is to the view). If it snows tomorrow,  I'll be able to watch!

January 5, 2010

Ok, first week in and I've already messed up. On my way to knitting tonight, I thought, "oh! I'll take a picture of where me and the knitters hang out!" And then? I forgot. And there really isn't any way to take a picture at 7:30 at night (not on my little digital camera anyway!). Oh well, back to it tomorrow :)

The departure area at Nashville International Airport

Word to the wise....it's easier to pick people up in this area than it is in the actual arrival area. Lot fewer idiots up here....
